• FrameDrumSchool.org presents:
     2020 Velez/Sheronick Frame Drum Intensive
    May 27-31     West Cornwall CT

FACULTY      SCHEDULE     LOCATION     REGISTRATION

DETAILS:
There will be daily sessions on Tar, Bodhran and Riq.  Students will learn the "Glen Velez Style" of playing.  For the Bodhran we will be using hand techniques developed by Glen for playing a large frame drum...not the traditional Irish method which uses a stick.

For the Riq and Bodhran sessions we will break into two groups, beginner/intermediate and advanced.  Each class will build on the previous, and the material will feed into our working compositions.  We will end with a salon concert, all playing together, on the final evening.

The intensive will focus on 4 areas:
1) playing technique
2) rhythmic organization
3) tools for self creativity
4) experiencing the joy of group frame drumming

Our goal is to create an annual event that allows for an acceleration of the players frame drum technique as well as an evolving appreciation of the power and versatility of these amazing instruments.

FACULTY:

Glen Velez - FOUR TIME GRAMMY AWARD WINNER, Glen Velez is the founding Father of the modern frame drum movement and is regarded as a legendary figure among musicians and audiences world-wide. Velez brought a new genre of drumming to the contemporary music scene by creating his own performance style inspired by years of percussion and frame drumming studies from various cultures. Velez’s virtuosic combinations of hand movements, finger techniques, along with his original compositional style, which incorporates stepping, drum language and Central Asian Overtone singing (split-tone singing), has undoubtedly opened new possibilities for musicians around the globe, resulting in a shift in modern percussion.  www.glenvelez.com

Yousif Sheronick -
Hailed by the New York Times for his “wizardry on a range of humble frame drums”, Yousif Sheronick enjoys an active career as percussionist, composer and educator.  Since 1992 Yousif has performed alongside his teacher Glen Velez.  Other performing credits include Philip Glass, Yo-Yo Ma, Laurie Anderson, duoJalal and Ethos Percussion Group.  As a composer, Yousif’s frame drum based compositions have been premiered and performed around the world at both the collegiate and professional level.  Yousif has conducted residencies and master classes at top universities including Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, University of Michigan, University of Kentucky, the Queensland Conservatorium and National University in Australia.  With increasing demand from drummers around the world, Yousif established his online frame drum school www.framedrumschool.org.  www.yousifsheronick.com
